Being single today is hard, even if you're considered "pretty". Being single over 45 (I'm 48) is even harder. At this age I know more of what I don't want than what I do. I know more of what I need than what I don't. I know more of what I can tolerate than what I can't or refuse to tolerate.
One of the biggest signs you're getting older is when you catch yourself saying often, "What is happening to society today? What hapoened to ..." then fill in the blank. Well, whatever happened to respect, kindness, decency, and 'courting'? Yes, I said an old word ...courting.
I'm not really old-fashioned, nor am I narrow-minded. But, when does being a cheap piece of shit become the norm? Do those methods really work? Are women so low-minded in today's society they allow themselves to be treated as objects, cheap pieces of meat, bitches-n-ho's, and flavor-of-the-week-bae's?
I want to scream, "I'm not that easy. I'm not a piece of meat you can go to the grocery store and buy prepackaged. I'm wild, and I run really well, and my senses are sharp. Only the best tracker and skilled hunter will be able to even know I'm around, much less catch me. If you want simple and easy, you're in the wrong place."
I am currently not married, therefore I'm single. But, it appears that having the label 'single' is an invitation to every perverted, desperate-deginerate on the planet. I say planet because inappropriate messages, comments, and unsolicited pics and requests come from all over the world. So, its not just an American Asshole issue.
I'm a nice person. Any of you who have read my blog or posts for any length of time knows that I'm a very open, honest, and kind person. I fill my life with purpose, positive habits, and hobbies, and spend most of my time looking for the bright side, the hope side, and the victorious side of things. Most of all, I'm respectful. However, there seems to be another underlying cue to men that being nice, or saying a kind or encouraging word, or liking a meme or quote is a signal for flirting and open season on all the bullshit listed above.
I post a selfie every morning. That's another story, a long battle, and something Ive blogged about before. My selfies are for ME. They are not an advertisement to solicit 'other' kind of pictures for a viewing audience. Yet, I get asked regularly. Does that really work? Is the porn industry so hard that men seek their porn for free. Do women not value themselves enough not to be some perverts' flavor of the minute? You know damned well they are asking EVERY woman they message for their pics too ...you're just another set of titties. Before I get bombarded with comments ...I don't think there's anything wrong with a couple to share pics with one another. I believe it's a wonderful tool to keep things spicy in a beautiful relationship. But when a man doesn't even know my name asks me for a 'sexy pic', I literally get disgusted. I have resting-bitch-face. You should see my expression when that happens. Believe me, no one will mistake my thoughts or feelings on the matter. Most often though, besides being disgusted, I'm disappointed. I'm saddened and now regard that man as having a mental handicap, regardless of his education or success.
I don't want to be disappointed or ashamed of men. I love men. I know so many great men. I know real life gentlemen, true heroes, great fathers, wonderful brothers, and spectacular sons. I love and admire their capabilities, their strengths, and their physique. I want to be proud of every one of them, so it hurts to see some of them fall so low over something so fucking stupid.
...and the women. I cry! I cry almost daily when I see the state of women. I am a feminist and have fought for the rights and dignity of women my whole life, starting with my severely abused and handicapped mother. I am a survivor, not a victim. History has not been kind to women. Most of the world is still cruel to women. But the most abusive, demeaning, and detrimental species to women are other women. The most cruel, abusive, demeaning and detrimental species to men is women. Before you women spam me with hate mail, think about it, honestly, and you'll see I'm right.
I love women. No, I'm no homosexual or bisexual, but that doesn't mean I don't respect those sexual choices. I just know what I like, and I'm attracted to warriors, often bearded badasses dripping with confidence. It's just my preference. But, I love the beauty, the nurturing kindness, the inner strength, the fighter spirit, the ability to see potential in simplicity, and the healing nature of women. I believe women are the strongest beings on this planet. We can often survive what would break the toughest of warriors. But to see a woman debase herself to accept the behavior, advances, and demeaning treatment makes me sick. And when I see a woman do the same thing to others, makes me angry. There are so many I literally want to beat the stupid out of them. Women are the neck of society. We turn the head, we connect the head to the body. The state of things lay more at the feet of women more than anything, and I want to break a few necks everytime I get a rude, suggestive, or disrespectful message.
Bottom line - everyone is responsible for their own actions regardless of influence. I'm responsible to not allow that disrespect in my life. So, if you're that way toward me and I delete, turn down, or block you - suck it up Butter Cup and try to be a better person.
It's great being single, but it also sucks. Most of all, it's most important being a good person, to have integrity, and be filled with respect for myself and others.

I Remember You
I’m the type of person that gives all herself to whatever she sets
her heart upon. When I love, I love with everything within me. When I make a
decision, I throw all my heart, soul, and energy into the task I’ve
accepted. If I’ve accepted the task,
believe me when I tell you this over-thinker has already thought about every
conclusion, every outcome, every risk, and every possibility – and yet I
chose. The Word tells us to consider the
cost of something before we set our hands to it. Before we build something,
know the plans, know the cost, and know the materials and foundation that will
be required to complete the task. Don’t make
plans just to start a task, be determined and make the plans to finish it. While it’s a ‘nice’ philosophy to live by the
seat of your pants and make responsive choices as needs and wants arrive, it’s
irresponsible and in the long run costs many times more than what was ever needed
or required. It’s a thief – come to
steal any progress or profit. It leads
to destruction because the foundation wasn’t solid, the materials weren’t
right, shortcuts were made, and essential lode-bearing beams were never placed
properly. I believe my previous world crumbled because of this practice. My foundation was set on hopes and
dreams. My choices were reactive to emotion
and need. I knew better. No one is blame
but myself. I knew better and I chose anyway.
In the middle of this current phase of my life, I’m again beginning
to recognize myself. I’m beginning to
see that diligent, hard-working, responsible, frugal, driven, goal-oriented,
organized, over-thinking, button-downed, cost-counting, careful, blessed, planning,
creative artist that I once was, that I worked hard to develop, and that I fought
hard to shape. I see her plain and
clear. I’ve missed her. I whispered to
her in the mirror last night, “I remember you.”
I do not regret my past choices – to love and give everything to
the family I chose. I do not regret the
choices I made - because they were my choices. I own my choices, my mistakes, and
my failures. I wasn’t forced into making those choices, I wasn’t deceived, and
I wasn’t manipulated. I didn’t make a choice because of sympathy or need. I
simply loved – and I chose love. That choice came with a high cost - and I paid
it, I’m paying it now with every tear, every moment I miss them, and every moment
I miss not being with them as our lives go separate ways. But, I’ve also gained, or more accurately
re-gained something just as precious – me.
I’m building a new life now, and believe me – I’m counting every
cost. Every step I make I take into
consideration – everything. I’m not
meant to build something small in this world.
I knew that at a very early age.
I’m meant for greatness. I’m
meant to build something spectacular. I’m
not an average person. I never was, and I never will be. I’ve tried to be
average. I’ve tried to be what the world or people I loved wanted or needed me
to be, but I’m not meant to be any of those things. I am created for a greater purpose. I don’t
know what that is, but I do know the kind of person I need to be in order to
step into that role. She’s been baptized in fire. She’s been shaped and molded
in flame. She’s been kindled in
water. She’s been sculpted by the hands
of the Maker of the Universe. I remember her.
He whispers, “I remember you, too.”

Dinner for One
Thanksgiving and Christmas used to be my favorite
holidays. Well, they usually fell right
behind Halloween, yet still a favorite.
But in the last few years, I’ve come to dislike all of them. So, I’ve been thinking why has my heart
changed about the three times of year I looked forward to most? It didn’t take long to figure it out, and
part of me just holds my breath as I try to get the huge lump in my throat to
ease.
I loved these holidays because they reminded me of the
innocence of childhood, they were some of the few happy moments I experienced,
and then for my kids… oh, my God, to see the looks of excitement, joy,
anticipation, and happiness on their faces made me try even harder to make
those times better and bigger. Some of
my fondest memories are hearing my kids try to negotiate opening presents
earlier than scheduled, sneaking bites of the Thanksgiving meal before it was
served, and getting a sugar-high from all the candied loot and the excitement
from corn mazes, haunted houses, and riding around looking at Christmas lights.
I dread the holidays now because it’s a reminder of the life
I no longer have, the children that are now grown and don’t need me anymore, who
are located so far away that I’m not even part of their lives. I started crying
in the grocery store the other day because I saw all the Thanksgiving items
stacked in the center isle… I have no one to cook for. I used to start preparing a few days before
Thanksgiving marinating the Turkey with salt, butter and Cajun spices, and checking
off my list to make sure I had all the ingredients to make the full menu. I’d start the slow prep like cutting the
onions and celery, so they’d be ready when I started mixing, and start boiling
the eggs, baking the cornbread and biscuits to use for the dressing and
stuffing. I’d be making my list for
Black Friday shopping, mapping out a strategy to get the biggest items first
before the sun even came up, usually in a divide and conquer plan my ex-husband
and I split. Then after spending the first few hours of daylight wrapping
presents, Christmas decorating would commence.
While lights were being strung outside, I decorated the tree and the
inside. Which now reminds me… I don’t
even know where the decorations I’ve collected over years are. Did I leave them, did he throw them away, are
they boxed somewhere, does it matter? The end of the year was celebrated with
Sparkling grape fruit, upcoming wishes, and fireworks. Then the day after all the decorations would
be packed away very carefully, to start again the next year.
So here I am now… single, no kids, most of my life still
packed away in boxes stuffed inside a storage unit being exposed to the heat,
cold, and rats. How did I get here? I was a good wife. I was a good mother. The key word is ‘was’. I don’t know who I am anymore. I can’t be where I want to be, I can’t be who
I want to be, I’m stuck in a life where I’m so lost and very much alone. Can’t I just sleep until January? Spending time with friends and their families
don’t help… it’s a just stark reminder that I don’t have a family of my own
anymore. I know they mean well, but it doesn’t help. How did I get here?
I’m going to try hard to be jolly this season, to be
thankful, to be happy during the holidays, but forgive me if the tears fall
when I order a dinner for one with food I can’t even eat, or give gifts to
others that are not my family. During the holidays, if you see someone else
alone, I don’t know what to tell you.
Sometimes reaching out and offering a hand, an invitation, can make a
huge difference, but sometimes it can make them feel worse.
Maybe I’ll get involved with some charity organization where
I’ll work in a soup kitchen to feed the hungry on Thanksgiving and buy me a new
video game to help me forget all about Christmas.
Till next time,
~Jinx

Single-Lane Roads
![]() |
I
suppose there’s a deep part of me that has always desired to travel single-lane
roads. I’ve tried to go in the ‘right’
direction with the majority, but in doing so became engulfed in the masses and have
lost sight of my destination. Going with heavy traffic is easy and allows my
mind to wander, because I don’t have to concentrate so much on where I am, nor
keep my eyes peeled on the signs, or even pay too close attention to the
limits, because I’m in flow, everything is moving steadily and in the same
direction. I merge into the flow, move inconspicuously,
and then merge out when I reach my destination – often a place of routine,
acceptance and expectation.
I
can’t help but feel I was created for more.
The first phase of my life I spent fighting against what was expected, traveling on the wrong side of traffic, on constant edge, dodging oncoming trouble. The last phase, I spent trying to meet
expectations, lost among the heavy flow, trying to blend, and merge into
normality. In each, I lost a bit of my
true identity… one in survival, the other in suburbia. In this current phase I
set my own expectations because I’m finally starting piece myself together and go
in the direction I was meant. The only thing I know for sure is that I travel
on the road I was destined. I don’t know
where it will lead, and I don’t know which side of the road is the right one. I don’t know all the curves, bumps or hills this
single lane contains, but I choose to enjoy the adventure. I choose to notice the beauty around me. I pay attention to where I am on this
single-lane road. Sometimes I pass
another on my way, or dodge those going in the opposite direction, and
sometimes it’s lonely, but I continue.
For
now I ride alone, but I hope someday, someone on the same path, with the same
heart, filled with the same vision will accompany me. Until then, I wipe away the tears I’ve shed
grieving the life in my rearview mirror, downshift, and stomp on the gas.
Till
next time,
~T.L.
